Can You Transfer a Kia Lease?

Can You Transfer a Kia Lease?

As a lessee, you have the option to transfer your Kia lease to a third party. While your leasing agreement through Brown-Daub Kia allows for a lease transfer, it’s important to know the ins and outs of such a commitment.

The good news is, it’s simple to do at our dealership. Whether you’re near Easton, Allentown, or Quakertown, Pennsylvania, we’ll walk the new lessee through the must-know information needed to make the best of their new set of wheels.

Things to Know About Taking Over a Lease

You may recently have taken over the lease of a friend, relative, co-worker, or other acquaintance—or you may be on the cusp of doing so. Regardless, it’s important for you to know what’s in store throughout the remaining length of the lease.

Below, we’ve listed the three most critical components to always keep in mind. By doing so, you’ll have fewer surprises down the road.

You’re in Charge of Payments

In some ways, a lease transfer works similarly to a co-signer on a loan. While both names are on the lease agreement, they’re both held financially responsible. So, if the new lessee misses a payment, the original lessee will be required to make the payment.

Be sure to communicate with the original lessee to ensure there aren’t any surprises, such as a missed monthly payment.

You May Pay Added Fees

Inheriting an existing lease often includes a series of additional fees the original lessee may or may not be aware of. These potential fees could include:

  • Lease transfer fee
  • Credit application fee
  • Disposition fee

If you’re unsure, reach out to the team in our finance center to secure a solid answer from one of our professionals.

You May Have Limited Mileage

Whereas a lease takeover may allow drivers to breathe easily when it comes to their wallet, it’s important to know the mileage limitations placed on the existing lease. Each lessee is given an annual mileage limit—and going over that number is likely to result in excessive mileage charges.

Typically, lessees may be charged between 10 to 25 cents per additional mile. However, you do have the option to purchase more miles. If you do this, you can avoid any outstanding fees.

Follow the Lease Return Checklist

Once the lease term begins to near its end, drivers have several options to consider. They can purchase it, switch out the lease for a different model, or simply return it to the dealership.

If you choose to return the leased model, it’s important to follow our Lease Return Checklist. Doing so not only prevents additional charges, but it offers peace of mind, knowing everything is completed on your end. Before returning your lease, be sure to:

  • Remove any personal items.
  • Cancel or pause automatic payments.
  • Clean out the inside of the model.
  • If applicable, bring any paperwork related to completed repairs.
